Registration Deadlines
- not yet open – wording on the SC08 conference site (http://sc08.supercomputing.org) needs to be changed from stating deadline is May
- may need to push back later, want to keep open as long as possible
- last year, took 3 – 4 weeks to contact all participants and confirm registrations
- by September 19, need to have all participants passed on to registration people
- new “official date” - August 1, but otherwise (for workshop participants) August 15
Student Competition
- Brad Armosky will be willing to help configure resources at TACC
- “largest supercomputer in history”
- Julia Whites and Kenny at Oak Ridge may be able to help coordinate more resources at Oak Ridge
- community codes could be installed in users' directories in order to have access sooner, so we could do setup on their resources
- tentatively, Charlie Peck will head this up with help from Kristina Wanous
- Henry Neeman will offer new machine if it is in full production by November
- can pull back to BobSCed for problems that don't work well with TACC's Ranger
- also want to have a fall back in case of act of God
Student Program
- smaller scale and more focused content – maybe one session per day with valuable content
- no room after Tuesday at 2
- need to target a specific audience, and will they have time?
- Geniene and Laurie are student volunteers coordinators – talk about getting time off for student volunteers
- surveying student volunteers?
- how do we know what they want if we can't survey them?
- could we ask last year's volunteers what they would have benefited from learning?
- panel on how to apply for HPC job
Booth
- Tom's presentation last year – half the audience was interested walk-by people, so people were interested
- want to make sure we capture these people
- schedule posted for the booth – one overall schedule
- projector scrolling upcoming events at the booth
- put at the bottom of a slide show picture like last year
- top two events “fixed”, other ones scroll
- what presentations to leverage the space
- LittleFe presentation, PolyCom presentation
- still going to have online streaming/Polycom lectures for classroom at home - have workshop sessions on how to do distance learning
- 3D visualizations – Laura?
General
- need to explain and point more carefully towards which sessions are about what
- need to level of expectations – level (“prerequisites”), foundation required, interests
- talk about how to follow up and connect after the conference
- launch interactive projects at a summer workshop or at the conference, try to provide gateway to links for K-12 teachers to go
- not just show how tools can be used, but invite teachers into ongoing project using those tools
- maybe even find mentors to help move project into classroom
- give teachers time to explore repositories and also have people to help advise them while they're exploring
- want to introduce this fairly early
- intro for K-12 teachers (and others) on Web 2.0 collaboration - wikis, etc.
- important to use for fostering community presence
- adding this into the workshop topics as well

- make people sign waiver when register
- or tell them to sit behind the camera
