About Moodle

Moodle is an open source course management system. It's often used to create online content for a class and allow students to enroll and take quizzes, submit data, et cetera. The SC Education Program uses our moodle to store all of the materials from the summer workshops. Instructors are responsible for uploading content for their particular workshop either ahead of the workshop or during the workshop as the material is presented. Technical support for the moodle is provided by Kay.

Two Moodles?

Yes, we have two moodles. We have the official moodle that course instructors use to upload their files (http://moodle.sc-education.org/). This moodle is locked down heavily. Anyone can create an account, but before you're able to make any changes on the moodle, you must e-mail Kay and have her authorize your account.

If you're looking for a moodle to play around with, or your workshop participants are interested in using a moodle for experimentation purposes, they can use our (http://moodle.sc-education.org/sandbox/). Note: This moodle is frequently cleaned out! Don't put any content here that you want to persist! Make sure your workshop participants know this, too.

Uploading Workshop Content

A few weeks before your workshop, Kay will create the skeleton moodle setup for your workshop. (The terminology that moodle uses for this is "creating a new course".) This includes creating the "course" (workshop instance), creating the sections, and adding the instructors' e-mails and workshop description. If your moodle hasn't been set up yet and you want it to be, talk to her.

To find your particular workshop, go to our workshop moodle and find the category your workshop falls under. Previous workshop years will be underneath this years' workshop series. Click on the title for your workshop, which should include the name of the workshop, the location, and the dates.

Make sure you log in before you start trying to edit the workshop. Then, most of what you'll need to do on the moodle falls under two categories: creating a label and uploading a file. The following two links will walk you through both of these tasks:
