EAPF - 20100924
Contents |
Changing meeting time
- Number of people from other time zones, what day would be best?
- Send out a Doodle poll to find times; probably mornings (Pacific TZ)
CACM
- Very close to resubmitting, much cleaner flow/structure
- Addressing changes, Wen-Mei to help review
- Timing for publication important, coincide with TechPack, website activities, etc.
- ACMQueue publication? Online*only, may get out to wider audience
- Should have plan for coordination so that people have followup after reading article
TechPack
- Essentially ready to go.
- Would be good to have stuff online before announcing anything
- Coincide/coordinate with BoF activities?
SC
- EAPF good impact. Agreement with Communities to do broadcasts from booth.
- SC broadcasts "brought to you by ISNTV, EAPF" with EAPF specific slot everyday
- Tue,Wed,Thu.
- EAPF BoF (Tuesday)
- Fun yet informational activities:
- Expanding membership and awareness, recruiting, mailing list
- Give-aways, other collateral (crossword, game, puzzle)
- Lab coats
- Education Panel Wednesday evening (possibly changing?)
SF Meeting Report -- Future steps
- Discussed need for more formal organization
- List of activities, we need money to hold many of these
- Possibly form non-profit organization or find a possible umbrella org (e.g., ACM, IEEE)
- Mission statement, Goals/objectives
- "The EAPF is dedicated to establishing parallelism as a core competency within computer and computational science education and practice."
- Figure out model for having multiple teams working on different EAPF areas and activities
- Objectives:
- "Provide resources to enable teachers to include parallelism in their classes."
- "Create consensus among leaders on the elements of programming: What is of greatest importance, how and where to bring it into the curriculum."
- Where are we going to find our funding?
- NSF meeting
- Centering in on a date, getting proposal ready for sending to NSF
- Wilf will be in DC, could meet up with appropriate people
- West*coast meeting, USF -> Pacheco
- Invite*only activity, ~50 attendees, hoping for 30 from academia
- Initial EAPF budget
- Relevant meetings: smaller, regional meetings, relatively low*cost
- Micro-grants
- Where should effort be focused
- Forming paperwork for something concrete that people can see and take to their parent institutions
- "Here's what we are, what we have done, what we are doing, what we are planning"
- Goal to have plans and clear goals for the EAPF organization
- Community*based or Experts/White*paper *based?
- Foundation Model
- Different levels of membership, wider membership
- Supports wider, more direct level of communication
- More possibilities for recruiting into tier of membership for actively working on projects
- "Grass roots:" could really get people working on curriculum changes, content creation, delivery innovations
- How to get things implemented in a practical sense
- Need ways to disseminate information, encourage participation
- Should have some communication plans
Misc notes
Would becoming a non-profit foundation require "starting from scratch"
What legal structures does one of the professional societies (ACM, IEEE, e.g.) have as possibilities?
- Building on the prestige of one of these has numerous clear benefits
Want to make sure that individual institution doesn't excessively brand EAPF activities.
- Collaboration among industry members for wide support
Need budget, plans for future staffing support.
Push for larger presence, booth space at SIGCSE
Can cobble things together for SC, but need to start (soon) solidifying formality.
Suggestions for people to approach, contact would be very helpful, good.
Next call will have a doodle poll for scheduling.
